Description:
Surficial-geologic map and map of engineering geology and potential geologic hazards of the Kivalina area, northwest Alaska. The goals of this project are 1) Map the surficial geology in order to develop comprehensive lithologic unit descriptions and a geomorphic framework that can be used to understand the active earth processes affecting the village of Kivalina and the surrounding area, and map the bedrock geology to evaluate the lithologies for general engineering characteristics 2) Develop matrices and derive maps that describe the general engineering properties of bedrock and unconsolidated geologic units in the map area 3) Identify and map potential geologic hazards, including areas of flooding, erosion, thawing permafrost and slope instability 4) Identify and rank potential relocation sites based on favorable setting and geology. This work was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program, STATEMAP grant no. G10AC00321.
