The Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC) connects the state's largest geologic collections to research, industry and education communities for the purposes of greater geologic understanding, increased awareness of economic opportunities, and to stimulate public interest and understanding in Alaska's geologic history.
The mission of the Geologic Materials Center is to permanently archive, index, protect, and make available for public inspection, accessible geologic materials and related data to help advance exploration and knowledge of Alaska's natural resources.
The GMC is Alaska's largest and most comprehensive archive of geologic samples from offshore and federal, state, and private lands. The Alaska GMC is dedicated to helping geoscientists and the public understand Alaska geology through the acquisition and preservation of physical and digital collections.
Cores and samples stored at the GMC hold extreme value, as the information they provide may help the discovery of additional oil & gas reserves, geothermal energy resources, or new mineral prospects. Despite constant evaluations of geologic materials, there is often need to revisit previous work as science progresses. The examination of rock samples and core stored here offers an opportunity to further understanding of Alaska geology and potentially critique old ideas.
